I cannot tell you how many teams I have watched waste so much time, grooming, pruning, and re-prioritizing their backlogs. The truth is that the effort spent to maintain a backlog is waste. It is waste because the truth is that much of what goes into a backlog will never get worked on anyway. Why spend time prioritizing items that you have no clue nor confidence if or when they will ever get worked?

I learned that if you work hard and creatively, you can have just about anything you want, but not everything you want. Maturity is the ability to reject good alternatives in order to pursue even better ones.
